The voice of GNAWA is immediately recognizable. Major equipment includes: Guibari (or synchron): A three-cut bass made of camel skin produces lute, deep, resonant tones. Qraqeb (krakebs): Large iron castes that make an artificial sleeping rhythm. TBEL: A large drum is sometimes used in performance, especially during festivals. The music is repetitive, layered and powerful-often produces a transndo-like crasendo that draws both musicians and audiences into a shared spiritual place.
